The Red Mist

چکیده

An influential critique of anger holds that comes at an important epistemic cost. In particular, feeling angry typically makes risk less visible to us. This is anger’s ‘red mist.’ These costs, critics suggest, arguably outweigh the benefits commonly ascribed anger. essay argues importantly misleading. not because it underestimates benefits, but rather overlooks fact red mist performs a crucial moral function. By concealing risk, helps protect dignity and self-respect those who live under severe unchosen risk. function vitally in non-ideal circumstances, where many are unjustly subjected dignity-impairing And irreplaceable, cannot readily be performed by other political emotions, such as hope. Beyond providing novel defence anger, this argument has broader upshot. Anger’s reveals ignorance always problematic politics. Accordingly, should treated—as standardly been case—as unmitigated evil. first instance, our efforts better spent ascertaining when problem, when, instead, felicitous

Night of the Mist

"Night of the Mist" is the moving and deeply expressive statement of a part of the life of a 21 year old Hungarian Jew. From the spring of 1944 when his country was overrun by the Nazis, to the end of the war when he found his way hack to his home town, Mr. Heimler takes us with him through the terrors and pain of Auschwitz, Troeglitz and Buchenwald. And as we read we can catch vivid glimpses o...

Changes in Foliar Elements in Red Spruce Seedlings after Exposure to Sulfuric and Nitric Acid Mist

Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) seedlings were exposed repeatedly at a field site or in a greenhouse~to acidic mist containing the major sulfur and nitrogen pollutants of wet deposition in the eastern U.S.: sulfate alone, nitrate alone or with ammonium ion, and a combination of these ions. Acidities and ion concentrations ranged from below the mean to above the maximum concentration for cloudwa...

Effects of mist acidity and ambient ozone removal on montane red spruce.

Recent forest studies have established that high-elevation (> 900 m) populations of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) in the northeastern USA are declining. Because it has been suggested that changes in air quality are responsible for the decline, we examined the effects of acidic mists and ozone on several biochemical and growth parameters in mature montane red spruce. We used branch-sized envir...

Acidic mist reduces foliar membrane-associated calcium and impairs stomatal responsiveness in red spruce.

Acidic deposition can leach essential pools of calcium (Ca) directly from plant foliage. Because of the central role of Ca in environmental signal transduction, disruptions of labile foliar Ca pools could impair physiological responses to a variety of environmental stimuli and stressors. We investigated the possibility that acidic mist-induced depletion of membrane-associated Ca (mCa), which is...
